How to Play Blackjack Online

Blackjack is a simple yet quite an interesting game that is not too difficult to learn, but it can be tricky to perfect. The main objective is to get as close as possible to 21 without going over, and you play only against the dealer, not against other players.

Rules

  • The game is usually played with 8 standard 52-card decks. You will also find variants played with 1, 2, and 6 decks.
  • The Blackjack table can seat up to 7 players.
  • Cards from 2 to 10 are worth their real value.
  • Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth 10 each.
  • Aces are worth 1 or 11, whichever is better for the hand.
  • Dealer is required to hit on all hands up to and including 16, regardless of the players’ hands.
  • Dealer always stands on 17.
  • If the total of your first two cards is 21, you have Blackjack. This is the strongest possible hand.
  • You can Double on any two initial cards.
  • Double cannot be used after Split.
  • You can Split initial cards of equal value.
  • One Split is allowed per hand.
  • Split Aces only get one card each.
  • Insurance is offered when the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace. The amount is equal to half of your main bet and it is settled separately. If the dealer has Blackjack, your Insurance bet wins.

Gameplay

  1. Select your bet size and place the chips on the table.
  2. The dealer waits for all players to place their bets and starts dealing the cards.
  3. All players receive two cards face up, while the dealer reveals one of his cards and the other is placed face down.
  4. When it’s time to play your hand, these are your options:
Hit You will be dealt another card. You can use Hit multiple times in a single round.
Stand No more cards will be dealt.
Double Down Your bet will be doubled and you will receive just one more card.
Split If your first two cards are of equal value, you can Split the pair to make two separate hands by placing another bet of the same size, and then proceed to playing each of those hands.
Surrender Certain games offer Surrender option. When choosing Surrender, you fold your hand and half of your bet is returned.

Outcomes

  • If your hand total is greater than 21, you bust and lose your bet.
  • If your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s you win.
  • If the dealer busts and your hand total is 21 or lower, you win.
  • When the player’s and dealer’s hand total is identical, the game is push and original bet is returned.
  • Blackjack beats 21 total resulting from three cards or more.

Payouts

  1. Blackjack pays 3:2.
  2. Winning hand pays 1:1.
  3. Insurance pays 2:1.

Side Bets

Online Blackjack is all about the main bet and trying to beat the dealer, but nowadays quite a few variants also offer side bets, designed to make things even more interesting.

Perfect Pairs

By placing a Perfect Pairs side bet, you are betting on your first two cards comprising a pair. There are three types of pairs and each comes with different payouts.

Mixed Pair pays 6:1 and it wins when you have a pair of different suits and different colour.

Example: 8 of Hearts and 8 of Spades.

Coloured Pair pays 12:1 and wins when cards are of the same colour, but different suits.

Example: 7 of Diamonds and 7 of Hearts.

Perfect Pair pays 25:1 and wins when you have a pair of the same suit.

Example: two Aces of Spades.

21+3

21+3 side bet looks at a three-card hand comprising of your initial two cards and the dealer’s face-up card. There are five possible outcomes, and the payouts are pretty impressive, ranging from 5:1 to 100:1.

  • Flush: cards of the same suit. Example: 2, 7 and 9 of hearts. Pays 5:1.
  • Straight: cards in a sequence. Example: 2 of Spades, 3 of Hearts, 4 of Clubs. Pays 10:1.
  • Three of a Kind: cards of the same value but of different suits. Example: King of Hearts, King of Diamonds, King of Clubs. Pays 30:1.
  • Straight Flush: cards in a sequence of the same suit. Example: Jack, Queen and King of Spades. Pays 40:1.
  • Suited Trips: an identical triplet. Example: three Kings of Hearts. Pays 100:1.

Most live dealer providers you will come across at online casinos in Singapore are focused on Baccarat, and they do not cater for the Blackjack enthusiasts. Thank God Evolution is there to save the day, while other notable providers of Blackjack games online in Singapore include Ezugi, BETER Live, SA Gaming, Ho Gaming, and CreedRoomz.

Strategy & Tips for Playing Online Blackjack in Singapore

With return to player percentage often above 99.50%, Blackjack is probably the best online casino game you can play. This is also my favourite game and having played it in casinos around the world as well as online, I feel well-equipped to present you a list of strategy advice and tips designed to help improve your winning chances.

  1. Make sure to learn Blackjack Basic Strategy Or at least print it and have it with you while playing online Blackjack. By following a series of rules such as when to Hit, when to Stand, when to Double Down, you will have the best possible chance of turning a profit.
  2. Play Blackjack games with high return to player percentage. With so many different games available, you need to find those that offer the best payouts, so my advice is to only play Blackjack variants where RTP is 99% or higher.
  3. Stick to main bet whenever possible. The high RTP I keep referring to is that of the main bet in Blackjack games. Side bets almost always have lower return to player percentages, usually ranging from 94% to 98%.
  4. Double Down always when Basic Strategy tells you to. I’ve been known to choose Hit over Double Down a few times even when I knew Double Down was the right thing to do. This usually happens when I am already making profit and I am not prepared to risk doubling my original bet. Therefore, avoid making the same mistake.
  5. Never take Insurance. Even though it might be tempting to take Insurance when dealer has an Ace, you should never do that due to the fact that house edge on Insurance bets is whopping 7.47% in an 8-deck game.
  6. Carefully read the game rules before playing. Some Blackjack rules differ from one variant to the next, and, as such, they can affect your playing style and winning odds. Reading the rules for the game you are about the play will eliminate any nasty surprises.
  7. Use Surrender option where available. Surrender is a great option to pull out of a hand that has a high chance of losing and still get half of your stake back. Blackjack games supporting Surrender may compensate for this with some other unfavourable rules, so make sure that particular variant offers a high RTP as well.
  8. Never split two 10s. A hand where two cards make a total of 20 is a great starting hand and should never be split. You may feel tempted to do so expending to receive two more face cards, but you could easily get a 2 and a 4, and thus ruin a perfectly good hand, losing double the starting bet instead of winning.
